2015-2016

This year’s FRC challenge, Stronghold, had a very medieval theme: alliances scored points by breaching the outer works defenses (the low bar, the portcullis / cheval de frise, the moat / ramparts, the drawbridge / sally port, and the rock wall / rough terrain). Once past the defenses, alliances could then launch boulders at the opposing alliance’s tower to weaken it, and then climb the tower to capture it.

Our build strategy was to create a low robot with a shooter and pneumatic swerve drive, whose large and cushion-y wheels would allow us to breach the majority of the defenses (namely the low bar, moat/ramparts, sally port, and rock wall / rough terrain) without difficulty. Our shooter utilized a rubber fly wheel and infrared camera that allowed the robot (Sir Swervalot) to automatically target the high goal and shoot with speed and accuracy.

New York City Regional at the Javits Center, New York, NY:

We entered the final round of the NYC Regional competition at the Javits Center in March, 2016 as Captain of the #2 team!  This is the furthest we have ever placed in the 66-team NYC competition.  We won the NYC Quality Award for exceptional quality in our final robot.  Although we lost in the final match, through the Wildcard system we won a spot in the Nationals Competition in St. Louis, MO in April.

New York Tech Valley Regional at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY:

We made it to the semifinals of the NY Tech Valley Regional Competition held at Rensselaer (RPI).

The Robot was awarded the Creativity Award by Xerox celebrating creativity in design, use of components or unique strategy of play.

With this competition, 3419 is proud to have entered what the FIRST Robotics world calls the “Engineering Quinfecta.”   We’ve been awarded all five of the engineering awards (Creativity, Quality, Innovation in Control, Industrial Design, and Excellence in Engineering) all in a 4-year competition period—we might just be the youngest member of this group!
